What is it?

This is a pain that affects the sciatic nerve, which starts from the lumbar-sacral area and branches out through the pelvis, down to the lower limbs.

Sciatica often strikes suddenly, for example while lifting a weight by bending incorrectly, and can cause a latent, shooting or stinging pain, extending from the buttocks along the lower limb.

In more severe cases, the pain is accompanied by numbness, tingling and weakness in the leg.

There sciatica and the associated pain develops from a pinched nerve, a herniated disc, or the presence of a bone spur that causes inflammation of the nerve, which may radiate to only one or both sides.

It often resolves spontaneously. Applying ice in the first few hours can relieve the pain (then it is good to apply hot compresses), but if the pain does not go away on its own, a diagnosis is needed to identify the cause.
