These are temporary and involuntary contractions of a muscle or group of muscles that can cause pain and temporarily make it impossible to use the affected muscle, which feels hard to the touch.

They usually occur in the thigh, calf and foot, often after intense physical activity, but can also occur at rest, for example during the night, disturbing sleep.

Among the most common causes are:
