WHAT ARE THEY
Scientifically known as bruises, they are purple to greenish discolorations that form on the skin generally following trauma, but sometimes also due to various pathologies.
Their particular color is due to the degradation of hemoglobin leaking from the capillaries and their presence can be accompanied by pain and swelling.
CAUSE
Bruises can be the expression of conditions of different nature.
They most often arise after accidental impacts, falls, injuries, domestic accidents, pinches and bites. In these cases the skin does not undergo a laceration, but the underlying tissue and muscle fibers are crushed and the blood inside them spills, remaining trapped just below the skin surface.
There are also some medications that can cause or facilitate the formation of a bruise.
REMEDIES
Most of the time, some “do-it-yourself” remedies prove to be very helpful, such as applying cold compresses (perhaps with ice) to the area affected by the bruise, as these help to calm the inflammation, swelling and pain.
Even elevating the body part affected by the trauma can facilitate the reabsorption of the bruise. However, in case of severe trauma or previously diagnosed diseases, it is best to consult a doctor.
